Steve Taylor

  A tribute to the legend

Steve, as most of you will know, has pretty much single handedly edited both the club matchday programme and the web site for well over a decade.  As he finally lays down his keyboard I thinks it's the right time to say a big THANK YOU and to pay tribute to his huge contribution to T&MUFC.

Generally found in the top right hand corner of any stand surrounded by thick fog, Steve has become one of the unseen victims of the smoking ban.  Now, having been forced onto the terraces, where danger lurks at every corner, he feels that it is time to end his personal battle between pencil, camera, tobacco and bog-enders.

I've know Steve for a good number of years and can honestly say that I've been amazed at how he has managed to sustain such a constant level of enthusiasm.  Always receptive to new ideas and innovations he has always been prepared to listen to suggestions from fellow supporters (occasionally when exits have been both visible and attainable).

His greatest triumph was winning the award for best non-league web site.  No, I'm not wisecracking on that one, as it's a feat that's unlikely to be repeated - Respect!

Steve added life to his site through pictures.  He was an early adopter of digital photography, long before the likes of Nigel Wood appeared with their fancy 'zoom' lenses and 'mega' pixeled contraptions.

Here are a few of my favourites:

An action packed scene from Ashford (This season)

Met Police - first game 06/7 And of course, the classic Molesey (just before Kingo's howler)

Finally, I offered the faithful the opportunity to add their own tributes. I've filtered out the illiterate ones (apart from Bill Hill, who is bigger than me!).

From everyone at Tooting and Mitcham United Juniors FC I'd like to express our thanks and appreciation to Steve in producing this wonderful web site and giving the Juniors extensive exposure.
Steve always went out of his way to help and publicise our activities and he will be sorely missed by us as well as the senior club.

Its given us as fans everything we've needed over the years. Its always been about the most up to date website in the league, with all the latest info about fixture changes etc, including youth & ressies. And all the up to date stats that some of us like to peruse from time to time.

Steve, may I be the first to thank you for all your help and the work you have put not only into this web site, but in to the club as a whole.

I dont think many people have a clue of the amount of work you have put in over the years, and I for one will miss YOUR web site as it has been a source of knowledge to me for many many years.

Do not be a stranger, we hope to see you at Imperial Fields as often as you want to come.

Have a happy retirement, and best wishes.

A bad day for the club. Its a major shame, because for a long time this was one of the best non league websites around. Still is in fact.

One of the main plus points has been its unofficial status. Despite obvious collaboration with the club, there was also autonomy.

There have been many cases where the "official club websites" become very dictatorial and censor any anti-club sentiments. I hope any new website doesn't go down that route.

Thanks for the last 11 years Steve

PS: Steve is still alive and well (as well -as can be expected) and is happy to receive visitors.  Just look for the blue smoke at most games!
