The
opening game of 2009 for both clubs saw each
field strong line ups in an attempt to shake off the
cobwebs after weeks of inactivity. The Terrors also
celebrated the on loan return of Michael
Antonio. Dave King sat out his one match
suspension.
Tooting
had plenty of the ball throughout and created numerous
chances. However it was the visitors who always
looked more assured and were able to open the Terrors
defence up at will, scoring three within the opening
twenty four minutes. Each goal was the result of
a controlled breakaway. The first caught Dean
Hamlin out of position, leaving a huge gap that
Beckford exploited, albeit with the help of a
defelction. Secondly came a fine solo effort
from defender Carpenter who broke clean through the
centre, placing his shot under new keeper Linnie. and
the third was the product of another clinical break
through the middle.
Paul
Vines pulled one back with a looping header from a
long deep cross from Andrew Howell, but the three goal
cushion was restored four minutes later with another
slick move that started down the left and was finshed
by a low shot from Power from the edge of the area.
More
Tooting pressure just before half time generated
several corners, plus an almost carbon copy Vines
header, this time with Hamlin the provider. Chris
Sullivan fell badly after a challenge in the Robins
area and limped off, wisely rejecting the offer of an
approaching stretcher.
