The visitors continued
to mount sporadic raids, spearheaded by the dangerous
Woods-Garness and for the last fifteen minutes there
was little to choose between the sides. Terrors had
perhaps their best chance of the match just before the
interval when Pinnock set Paul Vines free just on half
way. Beating a defender his shot pinged back off
the post, but it was too quick for the approaching
Watts to latch on to.
Half Time: 0-0
Colin Hartburn was having another
remarkable evening in the engine room and made his own
contribution to the attacking cause after 52 minutes
with a fine skidding attempt from just outside the
area that Tucker did well to scramble away for a
corner.
Billericay then hit their purple
patch and for the next ten minutes dominated play,
including a sequence of three corners in as many
minutes. But it was as Terrors were clawing
their way back into the game that the visitors had
their golden opportunity. Woods-Garness
intercepted on half way and advanced on Dave
King. Memories of Horsham flooded to mind as the
giant keeper tracked his prey, but this time the only
card on offer was one of congratulations as Kingy shepherded
the forward away from his target, enabling the cavalry
to arrive and relieve him of the ball.
Billy Marshall got his first taste
of Ryman Premier action after 65 minutes as Terrors
reverted to two up front with Pitterson, having
done a tidy job in the middle, returning to his native
wing position. The ex-leatherhead youngster
nearly made it two in two outings for him within ten
minutes of arriving when he swiveled and shot from six
yards forcing Tucker to stretch to push it
over.
Tooting were again in the driving
seat as Pinnock shimmied his way through the middle,
but was again unable to beat Tucker who then made his
best save to deny Joe Vines with a one handed save
from a powerful header.
Woods-Garness continued to cause
problems but King again foiled him fifteen minutes
from time, pushing his low shot across the goal mouth.
Ferguson then blasted the loose ball high and
wide.
Both sides continued to probe for
openings, but towards the end there was an air of
inevitability about the stalemate which was of much
more use to the visitors than it was to the Terrors.
Before kick off Billy
Smith made a presentation to long time Supporters club
chairman Pete Woodhouse to mark his 40 years as a
dedicated Tooting Terrorist.
