Against all expectations manager Billy Smith resisted the opportunity to rest a few regulars after the FA Cup exploits of the weekend, hoping to use this opportunity to get minds back on track for the resumption of league action on Saturday. Frustratingly, the result was not the one he hoped for.

The working Allan McLeod was missing allowing Craig Pitterson a full game against a Hastings side who had risen to 2nd place in the league with victories against K’s and Hendon.

Traffic problems had resulted in a delayed arrival for the Mitcham Belle coach with keeper Dave King running out to warm up as the Hastings players were going in.  But Hastings preparation was also affected when they lost two players from the starting line up to injury during the warm up, the unlucky Luke Newman having to be stretched off.

The Terrors formation returned to a 4-4-2 formation with Joe Vines playing at left back to accommodate the 3 centre backs, Jamie Byatt pushing well forward on the left and Pitterson doing the same on the right hand side. And despite the occasional uncertainty (and a fair amount of heated bickering) Tooting dominated possession and created all the chances in the first 35 minutes.

Soon after kick off 17 year old Hastings keeper Dullaway had to pull off a good stop from a deflected Byatt shot and Aaron Goode headed just wide from a Colin Hartburn cross after a half cleared corner. Then the ever lively Byatt started getting at the hesitant Hastings full back resulting in crosses met by the head of Paul Vines on 25th and 30th minutes.

Now the Terrors were in their stride and a fine passing move that started deep left ended with a cross from Pitterson wide right that had to be tipped over by Dullaway. From the resulting corner Paul Vines blazed over when he perhaps had more time.

Then on 37 minutes, and against the run of play, the game suddenly changed. A Hastings throw in on the right was crossed to the far post and headed back in. The Terrors defense cleared the initial threat but the ball fell to the in rushing centre back Carey whose low shot was deflected off a Tooting defender (York/Nelson?) past the disbelieving King.

Just 4 minutes later a corner on the right was cut back and again found Carey striding forward to shoot. And once again the ball deflected past King, this time off Goode. That made 4 deflected goals in a row!  Pitterson then made himself a shooting opportunity after a good run and his shot was also deflected only for Hastings to enjoy better luck when the ball spun off the outside of the post.

Half Time: Hastings  3-0  Terrors

Could the Terrors get back into the game in the 2nd half?  Not once a clearance of a corner on the left was slid back in for Adams to tuck the ball away after just 4 minutes of the half.

Even then the Tooting front two continued to chase and close down the Hastings defenders but understandably lost enthusiasm when soft options for balls forward to unmarked midfielders were too frequently available. Lipton scored a 4th in the 66th minute when a cross was spilled by King and Paul Vines increased his season’s goal tally with a consolation right at the end, taking the ball centrally and sliding home.
