Tooting
chalked up their first league double of the
season to finally bringing to an end a run of
six straight defeats. Sticking with
the same starting line up as at Dartford, captain Joe Vines had to be
content with a place on the bench.
A long range Colin
Hartburn shot earned a first minute corner as
both sides battled to grab the early
initiative. Seven minutes on Andrew
Howell thwarted a dangerous run
by Prior, but Parker struck back immediately
with a low shot aimed straight at
Perneckey. Soon after the home keeper
almost gifted Tooting an opener when he raced
out thirty yards for a ball that was never
his. Fortunately (for him) there was
plenty of defensive cover around to scramble the ball
away and spare his blushes and he was soon back in position to
save a Mitch Nelson header.
With the
visitors now gaining in confidence, Goode and Howell
combined nicely down the left flank to set
up Paul Vines for a fine volley that flew just wide.
Both the ex-QPR men had half chances of their
own before the break, as did Jamie Byatt, who
raced through the centre, only to have his
shot deflected away for a corner.
Half Time:
Bognor 0-0 Terrors
The Nyewood
Lane pitch is widely recognised as being one
of the best in the league and it happily
handled the torrential downpour that settled
over Bognor for the rest of the day. The
Rocks immediately stormed forward and Prior
skimmed the bar with a header. Heverin
nodded a good chance over the top before some
neat footwork from Parker gave Vines another
shooting opportunity which also zoomed over
the bar. Colin Hartburn limped off soon
after, suffering the effects of a nasty
tackle, and it was his replacement, Craig
Pitterson, who put in the cross that enabled
Vines to head home the opening goal.
An immediate
Bognor response was easily smothered and Vines
again came close with another header, this
time from a set piece. Fifteen minutes
from time the forward demonstrated his great
body strength by holding off the close
attentions of two defenders when he latched on
to a long through ball and slid it under
Pereckey for his second,
Simon Parker
put in his entry for the goal of the season in
injury time, picking up the ball on the edge
of the area and curling it beautifully into
the top corner.
Bognor
fought until the end and Prior managed to
force a double close range save out of King
before time was finally called.
