Jamie
Byatt celebrated his 100th appearance for the Terrors
by scoring the opening goal of an entertaining first
half. Five minutes after Paul Vines had slid a
back post volley just wide, the pocket battleship was
first to latch on to a Simon Parker shot as it
rebounded back of a post. Two minutes later he
almost made it a double celebration with a powerful
low drive that Tolfrey did well to turn away for a
corner.
Half of the normal
Tooting back line was suspended but, even allowing for
some naive decision making by Referee Walton, there
can be few excuses for the first two Ks goals.
Both stemmed from a reluctance to tackle around the
edge of the penalty area allowing first Wilson-Dennis
and then Lodge to pick their spots.
Terrors came close to
re-taking the lead on twenty minutes when Aaron Goode
cut in from the right and set up Parker, forcing
another good save from Tolfrey. Sadly Byatts big day
was brought to an unsavory end after half an hour when
he was on the receiving end of a bad tackle and forced
to limp off - another one missed by Walton!
Kingston are a
well drilled side, including a good grounding in how
to dupe referees (Wilson-Dennis' ability to fold like
a deck chair when approaching the 18 yard box is still
at the laughable stage and needs to be worked
on), However, they have in their armoury one of
the best set piece moves that I've seen for some time
- at any level. Ignoring the questionable nature
of how the kick was won, the execution was perfect and
inevitable completed by the prolific Traynor.
Deep into stoppage
time Paul Vines came close to reducing the arrears
with a 12 yard volley from an Andrew Howell Cross that
flew just wide.
Half Time: Terrors
1-3 Kingstonian
The two goal cushion
meant that K's were not going to take any risks after
the break and goal scoring opportunities for Terrors
were few and far between. Tolfrey fluffed a Matt
York free kick after an hour, but there were defenders
aplenty around him to clear up. Adam Thompson
had escaped punishment for a deliberate handball under
the less than watchful eyes of the referee and
adjacent linesman, but was even luckier on the hour
when he got off with a caution for a spiteful lunge at
Aaron Goode. York
nearly made the visitors pay for that foul, bringing
another flying save from Tolfrey from the resulting
free kick and for the last fifteen minutes Terrors
pushed hard. However, it was not until time
added on that the deficit was reduced when Aaron Goode
was first to pounce on a half cleared free kick.
Just before the final whistle a Jason Henry shot was
deflected agonisingly wide, but K's hung on for a hard
fought win.
