A disjointed second half performance condemned Tooting to a not undeserved defeat at the hands of the divisions basement side.  However, all is not what it seems, as Margate have recently benefitted from an influx of Maidstone's better players, including the influential Jay Saunders and marksman James Pinnock.

From the outset it was clear that Saunders was going to run the midfield show, but it was another new signing, Leroy Huggins, who came close to giving 'gate lead in the first minute.  It was end to end stuff for the rest of the half, with both sides attacking at every opportunity and soon after the opening scare Simon Parker fired over at the end of a superb flowing move down the fight side.

First blood though went to the home side when a long range free kick was pumped into the Tooting area and two headers later was in the back of the net.  A rasping 25 yard shot form Paul Vines was parried over by Turner for a corner as Terrors fought back, but the equaliser was something special.  Parker picked up the ball on the right wing and charged for the goal line, where he cut back into the area, beating two and curving the ball low around the keeper - another goal of the season contender!

As the break approached Tooting came under intense pressure and were lucky not to concede a penalty against Pinnock. Then another of Margates strike weapons, the long throw of Aaron Lacey, nearly delivered its payload to cause chaos in the penalty area and only ending with Saunders shot wide.

Half Time:   Margate 1-1  Terrors

The opening third of the second half was everything that that first was not, with neither side stringing much together.  Then, twenty minutes in, a superb defensive tackle by Aaron Goode to thwart a Margate breakaway signalled a change of fortune, though not for the better.  Another home attack lead to confusion at the back, leaving Dave King in no mans land and enabling Huggins to net the second headed goal of the night.

Tooting's passing started to go awry, and with more and more of the play being confined to their own half the Saunders inspired 'Gate sensed their chance to make the game safe.  Temporary relief came when Jason Henry won a free kick in the D after a surging run down the middle, but Parker was unable to keep his shot down.

A triple substitution replaced both front men, who had run themselves ragged, plus the hapless Joe Vines, who had been played on the left wing and struggled throughout.  The introduction of Pitterson into his natural position at least restored some semblance of balance to the team, but it was not enough to turn the tide.  Pinnock came close to scoring the third when he rattled the crossbar, but Margate had already done enough to secure their first three point haul since Boxing day.
