Following the trauma of last Saturday,
Sutton must have been licking their lips at the prospect of
lining up against a pointless Terrors side. This feeling would
have grown when Jamie Byatt had to make a goal line clearance
in the 8th minute. However, the visitors had not counted
on the an invigorated Alan Mcleod, playing some of his best
football for the Terrors. Sutton keeper Nichols dithered
with the ball in his own area, "I'll have
that" though Mcleod, and he did! The
returning confidence almost visibly surged through the team. Ben Abbey
came
close to making it two when he took control of a long pass,
turned, but hooked his shot just wide. Laurie Walker could
have been forgiven for not wanting to get involved after
Ashford, but he too was there to be counted, saving smartly at
the feet of Hann. Paul Vines Aaron Goode and Jason
Pinnock all had chances, but there was to be no further
breakthrough before the interval.
Half Time
1 -
0 Tooting started the second period
brightly with a Byatt chance flying over the bar and it was
not long before Ben Abbey caught out the Sutton defence and
the hapless Nichols to make it two. McLeod nearly added
his second seven minutes later, narrowly failing to find the
target with his head from a pinpoint Pinnock byline cross.
Further confusion in the Sutton defence found two Terrors
unmarked at the corner of the six yard box. Fortunately they
did not get in each others way as Ben Abbey, having already
scored one, politely stepped aside for Jamie Byatt to thunder
home a piledriver.
Time for a couple of changes with McLeod making way for
Pitterson and Paul Vines limping off to make way for Dave
Stevens. Sutton briefly rallied, with Walker again
forced to save smartly using his feet. But it was only a blip,
as both subs quickly got into the game. Pitterson tamely
directed a header at the keeper, then Dave Stevens opened his
goalscoring account with an emphatic deposit after Hartburn
broke forward and provided him with a killer pass.
Martin Dynan from the reserves replaced Aaron Goode for the
last ten minutes.
Two very late consolations for the visitors may have
knocked a little of the gloss off, but overall the Terrors can
be highly delighted with the first derby game against Sutton
since March 1986.
