The Terrors

1 - 2

Staines Town
J Vines (89)

GOALS

Thomas(54), Butler

Tootings miserable run continued with another disappointing display against high flying Staines.  Once again Aaron Goode shone in the defence, but against a strong Town midfield Terrors found it difficult to protect the back line or to provide the forwards with a regular supply of quality ball.  Despite their lofty league position Town did not create a single clear scoring chance from open play, although Howard Newton tried his level best to carve his way through, as did ex-Terror Elliot Onochie.

Paul Vines had an early effort smothered by keeper Wells, but neither side threatened again until Matt York had a 20 yard plus piledriver of a free kick palmed over after 38 minutes.  Three minutes later Andrew Howell delivered another of his deep crosses to Paul Vines, stationed on the penalty spot, but his crisp volley was turned wide by the Staines stopper.

Half Time  0  - 0

Onochie went close soon after the restart as the visitors again started to probe the Terrors defence.  However, it was a quickly taken short free kick that finally broke the deadlock.  Butler caught the home defence unprepared, slipping the ball to the adjacent Thomas who drilled it low and hard into the corner of the net from about 25 yards.  Three minutes later things got worse when a Joe Vines trip had Referee Mason pointing to the spot. Butler stepped up to make it 2-0.

Paul Vines and Matt York both had half chances and Andrew Howell started to cause a few problems, first by providing McLeod with a shooting chance that he chopped over the top and then by taking a Pitterson pass into the box, forcing the keeper to tip over.

Three minutes from time a square and low left wing by Craig Pitterson was slotted home by Joe Vines from just outside the six yard box.  This triggered a frantic last gasp effort into injury time, of which there was plenty thanks to Onochies unfortunate injury earlier in the half, with Jon Henry-Hayden and Pitterson going close.  Deep into stoppage time a run of the mill squabble over getting the ball back into play quickly, spilled over into a free for all resulting in a Staines yellow and an Alan McLeod red.

Lifelong Bournemouth fan Les Moorman decided swap Accrington for Mitcham for the day and helped us celebrate the 50th anniversary of our first win over a football league club. Here he is being welcomed to the club by Executive Director Martin Hazlewood. Thanks to Les for being a great sport and we wish him (and of course AFC Bournemouth - battling against a draconian and spiteful points penalty) the best of luck for the season.  How about arranging a friendly Martin?
